Since coming into office- Rwanda's new administration has not only taken French off the list of official languages- children in schools must be taught in, and those approaching government officials must communicate in English, but has recently withdrawn from meetings with other French speaking nations.
Agenzia Fides, and other sources have speculated as to claims that this could have to do with differences between the government of France, and that in office in Rwanda over whether or not French officials should be tried on accusations within Rwanda of French soldiers, and politicians on crimes such as training militias, or other alleged involvements. The French have flatly denied any part, saying their only role in the conflict was the UN sanctioned mission which encompassed the protection of civilians.
This follows demands by a French judge in 2006 for the Rwandan president to be tried for the death of his predecessor in 1994, the opinion of which is an action which the Mail and Guardian believes could have spurred the genocide in 1994.
