The sentence was for the killing of protesters. His sons were let off on corruption charges! He, unlike other Arab leaders since the Arab Spring, was the first tried by his own people, and sentenced to life in prison by them. Notable, he was not sentenced to death, as Arab leader Saddam Hussein was, in American allied Iraq, before the Arab Spring. The life sentence was considered by some to be harsh punishment against the former leader, for his role in ordering actions that lead to protester deaths. The decision comes before a massive election!
