Our service, from the start was supposed to be entirely independent of the Church. This is in order to insure our impartiality, and we certainly cover the good, bad, beautiful, and ugly of the church. For over a year now, we have called ourselves SACNS, on our blog, to emphasize that independence, but we are still the South African Catholic News Service... the problem is the following canon, which I only came across Today, which suggests we have been doing something wrong:
'Can. 216 Since they participate in the mission of the Church, all the Christian faithful have the right to promote or sustain apostolic action even by their own undertakings, according to their own state and condition. Nevertheless, no undertaking is to claim the name Catholic without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority.'
The SACNS, always aims to obey Canon law, and I personally do in addition to this. We have contacted the Bishop's secretary, and will submit to the church: if they want use to remove the Catholic from our name (we will not sacrifice our independence however), even if it means closing our Catholic branded facebook page and changing the C or getting rid of the C in SACNS, we plan to act in accordance with Canon law, on our title, this may entail a name change. We will keep you updated, and ask not that you pray for our success, but for God's will!
The Editor!
