Roman Catholic Pontiff to FAO summit: Empathy, moral business, lack of waste, access to fair markets: ways to reduce global hunger, "climate changes"

The Roman Catholic Pontiff, recently portrayed access to markets, empathy with and respect for those with less, and preventing waste as sure ways forward in the fight against hunger, "climate change".

The FOA (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations [UN]), along with other ground-level players, have increasingly emphasized local production over imported food aid, and a need to stimulate local markets, and educate farmers, and built infrastructure in food insecure areas. The majority of infrastructure, at least in the case of systems such as railways, on the African continent, is in one country: the Republic of South Africa, which itself does not spend enough on infrastructure in general.

The following will be a quotation (with paragraphing added), of the Vatican's Missionary News Service, Agenzia Fides, which notes a speech by the Roman Catholic Pontiff to a summit hosted by the the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. Quoting their article does not mean endorsement of the organization or their article, we provide this quotation in the interest of the public:

VATICAN - Holy Father tells FAO Summit: “Hunger is the most cruel and concrete sign of poverty. Opulence and waste are no longer acceptable when the tragedy of hunger is assuming ever greater proportions.”

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - “Hunger is the most cruel and concrete sign of poverty. Opulence and waste are no longer acceptable when the tragedy of hunger is assuming ever greater proportions.” This is what the Holy Father Benedict XVI said in his address on November 26 at the FAO headquarters in Rome, on the opening of the World Summit on Food Security.


In his address, the Pope recalled that although “statistics bear witness to the dramatic growth in the number of people suffering from hunger,” it has also been confirmed that “the world has enough food for all its inhabitants” and that “there is no cause-and-effect relationship between population growth and hunger.” Reiterating what he had affirmed in his Encyclical Caritas in veritate, Benedict XVI mentioned that “the problem of food insecurity needs to be addressed within a long-term perspective, eliminating the structural causes that give rise to it and promoting the agricultural development of poorer countries,” and “the need to oppose those forms of aid that do grave damage to the agricultural sector, those approaches to food production that are geared solely towards consumption and lack a wider perspective, and especially greed, which causes speculation to rear its head even in the marketing of cereals, as if food were to be treated just like any other commodity.”


The Pontiff then reflected on the “weakness of current mechanisms for food security and the need to re-examine them,” highlighting that the concept of cooperation should be coherent with the principle of subsidiarity. “With regard to countries that are in need of external support, the international community has the duty to assist with the instruments of cooperation, assuming collective responsibility for their development,” the Pope said. “In this way, cooperation must become an effective instrument, unbeholden to interests that can absorb a not insignificant part of the resources destined for development.” 


Benedict XVI also mentioned the risk of considering hunger “as structural, an integral part of the socio-political situation of the weakest countries, a matter of resigned regret, if not downright indifference.” “It is not so, and it must never be so!” the Pope exclaimed, saying that it was essential to “start redefining the concepts and principles that have hitherto governed international relations,” as “only in the name of common membership of the worldwide human family can every people and therefore every country be asked to practice solidarity, that is, to shoulder the burden of concrete responsibilities in meeting the needs of others, so as to favor the genuine sharing of goods, founded on love.”


To eliminate hunger, international action cannot limit itself to “international action is needed not only to promote balanced and sustainable economic growth and political stability, but also to seek out new parameters – primarily ethical but also juridical and economic ones – capable of inspiring the degree of cooperation required to build a relationship of parity between countries at different stages of development.”


In the second part of his address, the Holy Father indicated several necessary steps to take to combat hunger, promoting an integral human development: not view the rural world as something of secondary importance; favor access to the international market of products from the poorest areas; separate the rules of international trade from the logic of profit viewed as an end in itself. “Nor must the fundamental rights of the individual be forgotten, which include, of course, the right to sufficient, healthy and nutritious food, and likewise water; these rights take on an important role in the realization of others, beginning with the primary one, the right to life.” 


Methods of food production likewise demand attentive analysis of the relationship between development and protection of the environment, as “the desire to possess and to exploit the resources of the planet in an excessive and disordered manner is the primary cause of all environmental degradation.” In this sense, the interaction between environmental protection and climate changes are further examined and the human person, especially the most vulnerable populations, are placed at the heart of both phenomena. 


“Norms, legislation, development plans and investments are not enough, however: what is needed is a change in the lifestyles of individuals and communities, in habits of consumption and in perceptions of what is genuinely needed. Most of all, there is a moral duty to distinguish between good and evil in human action, so as to rediscover the bond of communion that unites the human person and creation,” the Pope warned.


In concluding his address, Benedict XVI mentioned the Church's commitment, without interfering in political decisions: “she respects the knowledge gained through scientific study, and decisions arrived at through reason responsibly enlightened by authentically human values, and she supports the effort to eliminate hunger. This is the most immediate and concrete sign of solidarity inspired by charity, and it brooks neither delay nor compromise.” (SL) (Agenzia Fides 17/11/2009)"

"Article 2

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."

These are genocide.

Acticle 2, section d: obviously refers to the destruction of potential population. The declaration does to refer to the prevention of one, or a million births: only to preventing births.

Legal abortion: whatever its' other intents: intends to prevent some, if not many future citizens of humanity, and of the countries where it is legal: from being born.

Thus: it destroys part of a future population: via imposed laws: which prevent citizens from stopping abortion, and which cause people to be allowed to perfrom abortions.

Therefore: whether or not the child is a person: does not make Abortion by state, or aided by state anything but Genocide in my possibly uneducated opinion.

How then: do so many governments throughout the world: so easily ignore what the World has declared as genocide?

When part of a left leaning," Sandinista National Liberation Front" marxist government, which overthrew their predecessors, but then had elections about 5 years later: in his own nation, D'Escoto accused the US of butchering his Nation, during a war, since then he has called George W. Bush, recently given special privilages on a visit to the Vatican, the Spiritual heir of Reagan, whom he (as a marxist government official): had apposed.

Awarding two pro-abortion (though also gay rights) advocates in the UN for “outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms” (LifeSiteNews 05/DEC/2008) earlier this year, there was no naming of these people as butcherers. This despite their actions possibly being defined as genocide in the UN definition, although purposely creating conditions where 'unwanted' population groups are voluntarily culled by means of birth control campaigns has not been treated by the UN that way in a very long time, except in the convention itself.

He has also accused the Israeli government of treating the Palestinians in their territory, in the same manner as South Africans were treated by the Protestant Apartheid Government, previously in power in South Africa. D'Escoto has now claimed he is receiving death threats: without mentioning the source: to which he is being subdued to needs for new security measures: by.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, however has since taken offense: she has said that this is all lies, aimed at getting her not to attend the anniversary of the "Universal" declaration on human rights.

Catholics are free to present their own oppinions within reason, that does not make these the views of the church, however, Fr D'Escoto, was personally removed from the priesthood for his position in a marxist government. In fact, Gabriela Shalev, Israel's ambassador, who the defrocked priest's spokesperson has been accusing of slander for her statements, is also taking this seriously. The UN itself is taking new measures, to protect the defrocked priest, however, he is not the first UN official to make an enemy of Israel, or the United States: nor does that mean that they will automatically be the source of alleged death threats. He has made such emnity, not be religious belief, but via his attacks on the western world. He is viewed as advantageous to those supporting extreme left positions, however: he was elected, only from amongst South American competition: in accorance with a moving seat, and his only role is as a mediator of debate in the house. He has been accused of being partisan.

The Holy See is is not in agreement with a UN document, which they contributed to: due to the fact that vital parts are excluded, and other acts are unwisely, or politically: allowed. The document includes parts still allowing for killing off, sterializing, or selectively aborting those with disabilities. All of these would be called genocide: if the world would acknowlege that the young and disabled are truly a section of humaniy, as much as hair colour, or race or belief allows for a group to be named as a valid population group.

The Vatican believes that killing disabled people will not cure the problem of discriminating against them. The actual issues were pointed out by the president of a Christian group in Italy: applauding the Catholic City State's choice not to sign the document. 23b and 25a, are the issues pointed out by the "Christians for Service" association.

Comments by the Vatican itself, are only indirectly hinted at by EWTN. Their reasons for not signing however seem to be due to the ideologically motivated flaws in the document. Their refusal followed a request to allow for additional clauses to close off the possibility of such genocide or "euthanasia" against the disabled.

Africa- DRC- Congo- UN Security council recognises crisis, plans to send in thousands more troops- Rwanda denies funding CNDP - Kivu Rebels,

The BBC reports- that the UN Security council has made a non-binding statement- condemning Nkunda's CNDP's violence, and calling for further troop deployment.

The rebels, who have consistently advanced against UN troops, are suspected to be funded and assisted by a regional foreign power. As the UN Security council asks Rwanda and the DRC to sort out their problems, and take concrete steps to create stability in the region- so hurt by the conflict- Rwanda is denying funding of the Rebels.

The rebels claim to be protecting Congolese from Rwandan rebels- who they claim aided the 1994 genocide. The Rwandan president was recently desired in a French court to face charges of murdering the man whose death sparked the genocide- his 1994 predecessor. Rwanda recently removed French from their official list of languages, and as a language in which children can be taught in schools, or people can contact the government. They have also pulled out of a group of French speaking nations, and since France asked for their president to appear in court have accused French soldiers, who were assigned by the UN to protect civilians in the region- of helping conduct the genocide. Others facing accusations, from the government whose leader has been accused by a French judge of murder- include the Catholic church.

The DRC Kivu rebels themselves have caused mass flights from towns whenever they have stormed different urban areas, have shot at UN MONUC troops, and of late have directly been fighting UN peacekeepers- who recently launched air attacks on the rebels who responded with anti-air fire.

The UN has noted that rape, and mutilation of sexual organs are a weapon of war in the DRC, and have asked for human shields to not be captured or used. Which side they are referring, on the second issue of human shields we have not been able to ascertain, as the government of the country has also began to lose control of their soldiers.

There was firing of weapons across the Rwandan border, and firing into the air- by Congolese defense force troops, whose government is gradually losing control of the terrified soldiers, as the rebels continue to take more ground.

Yesterday, the rebels- accused of kidnapping child soldiers recently- announced they wanted a peace treaty- having themselves broken the previous one at an opportune time, and are the cause of even further food insecurity in Congo- as villagers should now be planting crops. They are not however prepared to disarm, until "Rwandan Rebels", they claim are in the area- are "out" of the area.

Caritas Internationalis- from their position on the ground in the country are desperately looking for 1.5 million US dollars to help with immediate, basic needs. They were already desiring this when the number of refugees had not completely burst the capacity of refugee camps around Goma, a regional capital in Kivu.

The UN intervention may be needed to stop the constant loss of territory by the African UN task-force- and to possibly prevent what some (United Kingdom minister Mark Malloch-Brown- to Africa) are claiming could be a massacre on the scale of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. This comes After calls by Caritas Internationalis for global action and immediate relief of some of this humanitarian crisis.

DRC- Civil Society claims failure by UN, Government- to stop advance of foreign backed Kivu Rebels- calls for March- which should happen, or have happened today

Two days ago- Agenzia Fides informed the world of a press release given to them of a request given to the DRC government, to allow a peaceful march- with the aim at promoting peace in the Kivu region, eastern Congo- where rebels- having foreign assistance- have advanced with seemingly unstoppable force against UN (United Nations) MONUC troops, who tried to halt them with attack helicopters recently, and against the Nation's National Army. Civil society also regrets that the DRC national army has also failed to halt the foreign backed rebels from taking over the vast Virunga National Park area.

The march will remember an Archbishop murdered 12 years ago in previous conflict, on returning from comforting refugees. Civil society, organizing the march, believe that peace is needed in the region, they also have called on the government to improve basic living conditions in the "two provinces", by which they likely mean those in the Kivu Area.

Vatican- permanent observer to United Nations- Laws must never simply be regulations

The Vatican's permanent observer to the United Nations has stated that while laws are a necessity- regulations must never prevent the protection of the deeper values on which they have their basis. He further enforces that it is by the foundation of values, and respect for human dignity, as fostered in society and public realm as a whole that people are protected and justice done. He dismissed as less than just- the concept that law should be simply the implementing of norms created in past judgments, and regulations. He demonstrated his view that without respect for deeper values- laws cease to protect dignity, and human rights.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, who represented the Vatican in making these statements- said that law should treat all people equally, regardless of social, economic, or political realities. He believes law should at its foundation- respect dignity, and truly is needed as it has become a pillar of the international efforts at global development.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights- he says- clearly implies a need for the rule of law.

Vatican to UN- Malaria still a threat- poor need treatment

The Permanent observer of the Vatican to the United Nations- has highlighted the plight of millions, who contract malaria each year. At least two people die every sixty seconds from a disease which is preventable. The Vatican is concerned that the poor are missing out on being cured of a curable disease, and have asked for further efforts in this field.

His Excellency- Holy Father- Pope Benedict XVI has again taken a stand against materialism, and selfish market speculation, as well as against the inordinate way in which funds are spent selfishly on sophisticated military technology by many developed nations- rather than on food security. He says that these actions are a cause of the World Food Crisis. This he said to the director of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, in written form.

Benedict XVI believes that materialism- which only aims at physical goods- shows a misunderstanding of the divine dignity of the human person, who was elevated to great lengths when God chose to become man.

The reckless decisions by western governments and those who vote for these persons to gain power- has a much larger effect on the poor than on western voters. The recent financial crisis for instance is estimated to cost 100 million people their livelihood- the hardest hit majority of these will be on the African continent.

World Bank- Financial Crisis will create 100 million new poor people- majority in Africa

According to the President of the world bank- the First World (Developed World) Financial Crisis will force another 100 million people, majority being in Africa- into poverty. This is as analysts estimate that 607 billion dollars are hidden in foreign bank accounts, having been stolen from the African people via fraud and other activities. This is enough to pay off African nations' debts, but due to rampant corruption- the poor continue to be abused on the continent- as western nations continue to neglect forcing a raising of standards by those they trade with.

The milk crisis, and use of child labor in many Asian Nations, are a direct result of western Negligence. Africa has a very similar, unnatural situation- due to western powers refusing to solve the route causes of problems, as the Vatican also has recently asked them to do, with issues involving conflict.

The United Nations Hight Commissioner of Refugees,Antonio Guterrez, at the 59th session of the UNHCR Executive Committee, stated that the UN efforts continue to fail in dealing with displaced peoples and with food needs, and that this is feeding hostilities and wars.

UN- Vatican asks for universal policies on disarmament

Tuesday- Zenit News Reports (Friday 10th October) that Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Vatican representative to the UN- has called for a universal policy on Nuclear weapons- calling the arms race between some Nations- notably including, though not mentioned- the United States of America, and Russia, and China, India and Pakistan- to be against the Spirit of the United Nations. Such Nations are active in causing other less well off nations to abandon nuclear weapons- but themselves retain them against peoples ideas of fair play. The Archbishops thinks that this is harming efforts at non-proliferation.

Other arms races were also looked at by the Archbishop- who claimed that he was glad for the moratorium on cluster bombs recently achieved.

The Catholic church never has apposed war itself- a necessary endeavor in many cases- but does believe in firstly aiming at peaceful means where possible. They also believe that as few lives should be lost in any war as viable. Buying arms to defend one's nation is legitimate- but the reason the Vatican apposes nuclear arms, and cluster bombs so widely in the modern era- is that the threat of using these may be a powerful deterrent- but using them is a mortal sin- and good must never be achieved through evil- as evil only spawns further evil. The use of nuclear weapons- which always harm civilians when aimed at a city, or base- because of their wide range- is always the substance but not always the guilt of mortal sin.

The west must itself lead the way- through diplomacy instead of nuclear weapons- and whether or not they see these as necessary- Christian nations must themselves get rid of their nuclear weapons and focus on conventional and powerful normal means of defense of human rights- while never ceding to threats themselves from other nations with nuclear weapons.

Vatican- Solve source of world problems- not simply the symptoms

The Vatican has encouraged the UN to focus on the causes of world problems- while not ignoring the symptoms. This comes from Archbishop Celestino Miglior, permanent observer representing the Vatican at the United Nations.

The Archbishop is trying to point out that many statements by Nations in the world, only increase hostility- and that basing itself on the Universal Declaration of Human rights- a sad, beautiful result of that horrid Genocide, and battle ruined time- known as the Second World War- The UN showed the importance of peaceful means of achieving goals, and the value of every human life. He said that rhetoric should increase peace- and that peace is another word for development- as peace and development go hand in hand! He was clearly also referring to the violent rhetoric of some nations in recent times.
