Due to the as ever sensationalist and irresponsible journalism of Vatican based but not Vatican vetted paper L'Osservatore Romano- which heroised the Beatles for saying they were more popular than God, U2's Bono who spent just 200 000 of over ten million raised by his organisation One on the poor- for praying in public for his own agenda, and promoted a pro-abortionist stance in the Recife issue, we once again have to clarify their inexcusable hell-worthy errors, which have been aplenty since their new editor somehow got the job:

Also, in anticipation of the controversy that these statement would produce, Dr. Janet Smith has prepared a helpful guide to what the Pope did and did not say.

Let's look at the Pope's remarks and see what he actually said.

Seewald: . . . In Africa you stated that the Church's traditional teaching has proven to be the only sure way to stop the spread of HIV. Critics, including critics from the Church's own ranks, object that it is madness to forbid a high-risk population to use condoms.

Benedict: . . . In my remarks I was not making a general statement about the condom issue, but merely said, and this is what caused such great offense, that we cannot solve the problem by distributing condoms. [EMPHASIS ADDED] Much more needs to be done. We must stand close to the people, we must guide and help them; and we must do this both before and after they contract the disease.

As a matter of fact, you know, people can get condoms when they want them anyway. But this just goes to show that condoms alone do not resolve the question itself. More needs to happen. Meanwhile, the secular realm itself has developed the so-called ABC Theory: Abstinence-Be Faithful-Condom, where the condom is understood only as a last resort, when the other two points fail to work. This means that the sheer fixation on the condom implies a banalization of sexuality, which, after all, is precisely the dangerous source of the attitude of no longer seeing sexuality as the expression of love, but only a sort of drug that people administer to themselves. This is why the fight against the banalization of sexuality is also a part of the struggle to ensure that sexuality is treated as a positive value and to enable it to have a positive effect on the whole of man's being.

Note that the Pope's overall argument is that condoms will not solve the problem of AIDS. In support of this, he makes several arguments:

1) People can already get condoms, yet it clearly hasn't solved the problem.

2) The secular realm has proposed the ABC program, where a condom is used only if the first two, truly effective procedures (abstinence and fidelity) have been rejected. Thus even the secular ABC proposal recognizes that condoms are not the unique solution. They don't work as well as abstinence and fidelity. The first two are better.

3) The fixation on condom use represents a banalization (trivialization) of sexuality that turns the act from being one of love to one of selfishness. For sex to have the positive role it is meant to play, this trivialization of sex—and thus the fixation on condoms—needs to be resisted.

So that's the background to the statement that the press seized on:

There may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one cannot do whatever one wants. But it is not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection. That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality. [EMPHASIS ADDED]

There are several things to note here: First, note that the Pope says that "there may be a basis in the case of some individuals," not that there is a basis. This is the language of speculation. But what is the Pope speculating about? That condom use is morally justified? No, that's not what he's said: that there may be cases "where this [condom use] can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way to recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed."

In other words, as Janet Smith puts it,

The Holy Father is simply observing that for some homosexual prostitutes the use of a condom may indicate an awakening of a moral sense; an awakening that sexual pleasure is not the highest value, but that we must take care that we harm no one with our choices. He is not speaking to the morality of the use of a condom, but to something that may be true about the psychological state of those who use them. If such individuals are using condoms to avoid harming another, they may eventually realize that sexual acts between members of the same sex are inherently harmful since they are not in accord with human nature.

At least this is the most one can reasonably infer from the Pope's remarks, which could be phrased more clearly (and I expect the Vatican will be issuing a clarification quite soon).

Second, note that the Pope immediately follows his statement regarding homosexual prostitutes using condoms with the statement, "But it is not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection. That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality."

By "a humanization of sexuality," the Pope means recognizing the truth about human sexuality—that it must be exercised in a loving, faithful way between a man and a woman united in matrimony. That is the real solution, not putting on a condom and engaging in promiscuous sex with those infected with a deadly virus.

At this point in the interview, Seewald asks a follow-up question, and it is truly criminal that L'Osservatore Romano did not print this part:

Seewald: Are you saying, then, that the Catholic Church is actually not opposed in principle to the use of condoms?

Benedict: She of course does not regard it as a real or moral solution, but, in this or that case, there can be nonetheless, in the intention of reducing the risk of infection, a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way, of living sexuality."

South African Bishops claim that state doctors', teachers' strike contravenes the public interest

A protest action over pay and benefits by public service unions, including unions consisting of educators at state institutions, as well of healthcare professionals, who are employed by the state, was the receiver of recent statements of disagreement from the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, the official Vatican endorsed Catholic bishops' conference for South Africa, and neighbouring nations. Military medical units have been sent by the state to state healthcare facilities, according to a number of local media reports.

Cosatu (Congress of South African Trade Unions), a non-parliamentary member of the ruling (ANC) African National Congress's tripartite alliance, was part of general protest action, according to a "No Comment TV" video from independent European Union special interests service, EuroNews, which is connected to a number of European state broadcasters, and has an official contract with the European Union to air certain programs. Mine workers, have also been on strike according to text on video sharing site YouTube below the "No Comment TV" video by EuroNews.

South Africa has a history of violent and controversial protest action, those not partaking in some protest actions have in the past been reported in local press as having been intimidated to join protest action, or having been injured.

The recent protest action, has accompanied reported intimidation of other individuals by individuals partaking in the general protest action. Local media has claimed that some students in a less affluent area had allegedly assaulted a group of educators who were partaking in the protest action, via stoning. Stoning is a common form of vigil-ante behaviour in South Africa, where victims often do not survive the process.

There have been allegations of obstructions of ambulances, and some students have been advised that if they attend school, they should do so without wearing any form of identifiable school uniform. The president of the republic has been reported recently in local media as disapproving of the actions of strikers.

A number of deaths have been reported, allegedly due to the actions of strikers, and police have reportedly used rubber bullets, in accordance with usual police policies involving crowd control. Police and state agents, have been deployed to certain areas according to local media, reportedly, in order to address security, health and human special interests which could have been affected by the protest action.

South Africa always makes it into the world news for all the wrong reasons, after we added to the numbers of our police, another threat has emerged, that of potential tourists having a whale of a time. That is to say, a whale torpedoing their boat, jumping up and landing on it. Previously its mostly been similar actions by Great White Sharks in South Africa, which have gained such attention. Video was shot off in the Ocean near the Mother City, Cape Town, apparently there was a couple on the boat, one would assume from the lack of mention of any fatalities that they survived the big whale of a surprise. Their trip certainly wasn't a white elephant. But the yacht may need repairs. South Africa is famous for whale watching, which the couple, says EuroNews no comment tv, were doing.

The Editor of Archdiocesan News, Johannesburg, has once again sent us an update on the relics of Saint Therese Martin:

"St Therese at St Martin de Porres, Geluksdal with the East Rand youth and their chaplain after a night vigil.
One of the first photos of the relics of St Therese as they begin their South African tour of parishes at St Martin de Porres – the very first parish on the itinerary.
The youth – and some adults – of the Far East Rand deanery came from the parishes of St Lambert, St Martin, St Nicholas in Daveyton; St Paul, Tsakane; Kristo Nkosi, Kwa Thema; St Anthony Pucci, Duduza and from the host parish in Geluksdal for a night Vigil on Tuesday 29 June. The youth had prepared multimedia presentations for the vigil on the life of St Therese through research on internet. The picture was taken after the vigil. Fr Daniel of Daveyton (on the left), deanery chaplain for the youth, also kept the vigil.


The ‘woodmead’ photos were taken at the Maronite Parish of Our Lady of the Cedars of Lebanon, Woodmead on the afternoon of Saturday 3 July."

"Relics of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux arrive in Johannesburg on Friday 25 June



"On Friday 25 June at 14:00 Catholic priests, Father Fr Vusi Sokhela and Father Shaun Mary Von Lillienfeld, the Carmelite Sisters and the Catholic Order of the Knights of da Gama will ceremonially receive the traveling relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux at the Carmelite Convent in Benoni. (46 Dickenson Rd, Benoni North).

"The reliquary, an ornate casket, containing some of the mortal remains of the saint will be borne in solemn procession, with rose petals strewn before it, into the Convent Chapel where they will lie for veneration until 28 June when they are taken to Geluksdal Catholic Church, the next stop in a three month tour across the length and breadth of South Africa.

"Catholics believe in the Church ‘on earth and in heaven’ and venerate saints, their ancestral family in faith, who while on earth led exemplary lives and who, in heaven are in a position to intercede for the living.



"The relics drew extraordinary crowds in England and Wales when 250,000 people venerated them during a tour in 2009 and organizers are hoping for the same response in South Africa.



"Fr Shaun hopes that the visit of the relics will lead to ‘devotion to the saints taking its rightful place in the Liturgical Calendar’. He hopes too that the secular media will give the tour some coverage so that all Catholics, especially lapsed Catholics, may have the opportunity to share a spiritually joyful event.



"Fr Vusi, who initiated the visit after a chance visit to his parish of a French follower of St Therese’s Little Way, hopes that Saint Therese who died aged only 24 years will be a role-model for the youth especially since we ‘have no (South African) saints of our own. Maybe one day as a result of this visit the relics of a South African saint will tour France.’



"Devotion to Saint Thérèse, also known as St Thérèse of the Face of Child Jesus and St Thérèse of the Little Flower, is marvelous considering that she died at the end of the 19th century having been an enclosed nun for all her short adult life. She was a Carmelite nun, a member of the same Carmelite order as the sisters of the Carmelite convent in Benoni where the relics will be received.



"St Therese’s relics are being hosted in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg (roughly southern Gauteng) by Fr Vusi Sokhela, Parish Priest of St Francis of Assisi, Yeoville and Vicar of Youth and Fr Shaun Mary Von Lillienfeld, Administrator of the Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King, Saratoga Avenue, Doornfontein near Ellis Park. The visit has been sanctioned by the Archbishop of Johannesburg, Buti Tlhagale, and also by the bishops of those dioceses to which the relics will tour – Tzaneen, Aliwal North, Queenstown, Kokstad, Umzumkulu, Mariannhill, Durban and Cape Town.



"During the 12 week tour more than 24 churches, monasteries and institutions will host the relics including Mother Teresa’s Home, a hospice in Yeoville (23 Aug); Regina Mundi in Soweto where school children will be bussed for a veneration ceremony (26 Aug) and the Johannesburg Catholic Cathedral, Doornfontein where there will be a night vigil on 10 July, the eve of the final World Cup match.



"There was a lot of cynicism before the relics visited England and Wales in 2009. Yet a quarter of a million people venerated the relics at 28 venues; 35,000 at Westminster Cathedral alone. The Bishops of Scotland regretted not hosting the relics as Scottish Catholics protested at being left out. A tour of Ireland in 2001 sparked the biggest mass movement of people ever witnessed in the country with an estimated 75% of the population making pilgrimages to visit the relics. A later visit drew 2 million people."

Roman Catholic Pontiff to FAO summit: Empathy, moral business, lack of waste, access to fair markets: ways to reduce global hunger, "climate changes"

The Roman Catholic Pontiff, recently portrayed access to markets, empathy with and respect for those with less, and preventing waste as sure ways forward in the fight against hunger, "climate change".

The FOA (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations [UN]), along with other ground-level players, have increasingly emphasized local production over imported food aid, and a need to stimulate local markets, and educate farmers, and built infrastructure in food insecure areas. The majority of infrastructure, at least in the case of systems such as railways, on the African continent, is in one country: the Republic of South Africa, which itself does not spend enough on infrastructure in general.

The following will be a quotation (with paragraphing added), of the Vatican's Missionary News Service, Agenzia Fides, which notes a speech by the Roman Catholic Pontiff to a summit hosted by the the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. Quoting their article does not mean endorsement of the organization or their article, we provide this quotation in the interest of the public:

VATICAN - Holy Father tells FAO Summit: “Hunger is the most cruel and concrete sign of poverty. Opulence and waste are no longer acceptable when the tragedy of hunger is assuming ever greater proportions.”

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - “Hunger is the most cruel and concrete sign of poverty. Opulence and waste are no longer acceptable when the tragedy of hunger is assuming ever greater proportions.” This is what the Holy Father Benedict XVI said in his address on November 26 at the FAO headquarters in Rome, on the opening of the World Summit on Food Security.


In his address, the Pope recalled that although “statistics bear witness to the dramatic growth in the number of people suffering from hunger,” it has also been confirmed that “the world has enough food for all its inhabitants” and that “there is no cause-and-effect relationship between population growth and hunger.” Reiterating what he had affirmed in his Encyclical Caritas in veritate, Benedict XVI mentioned that “the problem of food insecurity needs to be addressed within a long-term perspective, eliminating the structural causes that give rise to it and promoting the agricultural development of poorer countries,” and “the need to oppose those forms of aid that do grave damage to the agricultural sector, those approaches to food production that are geared solely towards consumption and lack a wider perspective, and especially greed, which causes speculation to rear its head even in the marketing of cereals, as if food were to be treated just like any other commodity.”


The Pontiff then reflected on the “weakness of current mechanisms for food security and the need to re-examine them,” highlighting that the concept of cooperation should be coherent with the principle of subsidiarity. “With regard to countries that are in need of external support, the international community has the duty to assist with the instruments of cooperation, assuming collective responsibility for their development,” the Pope said. “In this way, cooperation must become an effective instrument, unbeholden to interests that can absorb a not insignificant part of the resources destined for development.” 


Benedict XVI also mentioned the risk of considering hunger “as structural, an integral part of the socio-political situation of the weakest countries, a matter of resigned regret, if not downright indifference.” “It is not so, and it must never be so!” the Pope exclaimed, saying that it was essential to “start redefining the concepts and principles that have hitherto governed international relations,” as “only in the name of common membership of the worldwide human family can every people and therefore every country be asked to practice solidarity, that is, to shoulder the burden of concrete responsibilities in meeting the needs of others, so as to favor the genuine sharing of goods, founded on love.”


To eliminate hunger, international action cannot limit itself to “international action is needed not only to promote balanced and sustainable economic growth and political stability, but also to seek out new parameters – primarily ethical but also juridical and economic ones – capable of inspiring the degree of cooperation required to build a relationship of parity between countries at different stages of development.”


In the second part of his address, the Holy Father indicated several necessary steps to take to combat hunger, promoting an integral human development: not view the rural world as something of secondary importance; favor access to the international market of products from the poorest areas; separate the rules of international trade from the logic of profit viewed as an end in itself. “Nor must the fundamental rights of the individual be forgotten, which include, of course, the right to sufficient, healthy and nutritious food, and likewise water; these rights take on an important role in the realization of others, beginning with the primary one, the right to life.” 


Methods of food production likewise demand attentive analysis of the relationship between development and protection of the environment, as “the desire to possess and to exploit the resources of the planet in an excessive and disordered manner is the primary cause of all environmental degradation.” In this sense, the interaction between environmental protection and climate changes are further examined and the human person, especially the most vulnerable populations, are placed at the heart of both phenomena. 


“Norms, legislation, development plans and investments are not enough, however: what is needed is a change in the lifestyles of individuals and communities, in habits of consumption and in perceptions of what is genuinely needed. Most of all, there is a moral duty to distinguish between good and evil in human action, so as to rediscover the bond of communion that unites the human person and creation,” the Pope warned.


In concluding his address, Benedict XVI mentioned the Church's commitment, without interfering in political decisions: “she respects the knowledge gained through scientific study, and decisions arrived at through reason responsibly enlightened by authentically human values, and she supports the effort to eliminate hunger. War against hunger, global warming can be won on farmlands – UN report

A new UN (United Nations) report suggests that one of the best ways to combat global hunger, and "global warming", is by focussing on local agricultural projects in food insecure regions.

Lamenting what he seemed to see as western exports to Africa, of relativism, and materialism, as well as what he saw as the export of religious fundamentalism, Pope Benedict XVI, today called Africa a "Spiritual Lung" for the world, during the modern day and age. Africa is likely one of the fastest growing theaters in Catholic Evangelization, the continent's Catholic flock having statistically grown to about three times the size it held three decades ago, in just that time. About 17% (About One Hundred and Fifty Million) of Africa's people are statistically Catholic. L'Osservatore Romano, a paper based in the Vatican, but not vetted by it, slated Africa's political elite, via an editorial, claiming that the resources of the resource rich continent were being unjustly plundered.

Some 250 bishops are meeting for three weeks, starting from Sunday, October 4 at the Vatican. They will participate in the second synod of Bishops for Africa. The opening Mass presided over by the Pope, will start at 9:30 in St. Peter's Basilica. The first synod on Africa in 1994 had focused on defining the procedures of a church in search of maturity. This second meeting will repeat the point, answers to the many challenges of the present. The document preparatory work has been published by Benedict XVI in March to Cameroon.

He will be in Rome as an expert in hand with several proposals developed with members of ECOWAS. The pope considers evangelization in Africa, an urgent priority. The previous synod on Africa, unfortunately occurred around the eve of the Rwandan genocide, and the BBC claims it was an event with much talk, and little else. The BBC, seems to compare that previous event to the current one, noting that this synod has a specific focus on the problems of Africa.

The Associated Press wrongly suggests that Bishops are likely to bring up the Vatican's ban on the use of condoms. Local Bishops' Conferences such as that in Southern Africa have already dealt with this issue, with minimal dissidents known for disobedience to the Vatican having pushed for condoms.

The Catholic Church in Africa is familiar with the success of the Ugandan anti-AIDS program, which successfully reduced infection rates, in contrast to nations which focussed on condoms, such as South Africa, these being where HIV/AIDS has rapidly increased as condom distribution has increased.

Condoms, beyond being considered intrinsically evil in Catholic dogma, are also viewed negatively in African tradition.

Many of Africa's refugees are Catholics, even coming from war-torn regions. The Vatican has suggested teaching Catholics to encourage peace in their surroundings.

The number of Catholics in the world has increased by 1.4%, with particular gains in Oceania and Africa. Vocations to the priesthood grew overall by 0.4%, though they decreased in Europe. The 2007 statistics were published in the new edition of the pontifical yearbook, called the Annuario Pontificio.A communiqué released by the Holy See states that the worldwide Catholic Church included 1.147 billion people in 2007 -- a 16 million increase since 2006. The numbers of baptized grew significantly in Oceania and Africa by 4.7% and 3%, respectively. Positive gains were made in Asia (+1.7%) and Europe (+0.8%). While North and South American Catholics decreased by 0.1%, they still represent half of all Catholics on the planet.The number of priests maintains a moderate growth trend that began in 2000 after more than 20 years of losses. Over the course of eight years ending in 2007, the Church's body of priests rose from 405,000 to 408,000. Africa and Asia reported strong results, whereas numbers were stable in North and South America. Europe and Oceania reported significant declines during the same period.Finally, the number of candidates for the priesthood increased by 0.4% on a global scale, almost reaching 116,000. Africa and Asia grew in priestly vocations, while Europe and America registered respective reductions of 2.1% and 1%.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal "Tarcisio Bertone", on Tuesday (10th February), in an effort promoted by the "Czech Republic" Ambassador, met with ambassadors from the European Union (EU), to the Holy See (Vatican). He showed the Vatican's deep concerns for Africa, and the Middle east. He begged Europe to no longer ignore other continents, and asked that they see and focus on human rights, and crying issues, weeping out of Africa and the Middle East in particular.

His ultimate request: that Europe help the delicate situation in the Middle east comprehensively; and that it deal with Africa: not as though sucking the marrow from the bones: but in a manner which is also best for Africa.

As possibly guessed by some: Altered Persuasion, is where we ask controversial questions, and write articles, which may be controversial, and may have no result, except to question.

We were alerted to a program, airing on SABC (Government Broadcaster) 2 recently (Feb 1st bout 9 o'clock): by the Bishops Conference in charge of Southern Africa: "The Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference" (SACBC). The program was produced by a woman: claimed by a source of ours to have in former times have been connected with the church in a religious order, we have not verified this. The program: looks at the Catholic priesthood, and interviews local priests. 

It is a defined dogma of the church: that no section of it will ever have authority to ordain Women Priests: i.e. that the sacrament would not work. Therefore: to ordain a woman priest is an act of schism, and heresy: an automatic excommunication.

The SABC 2 Documentary:on "Issues of Faith": suggested that the doors to "Woman" "Priests", should be swung wide open: and quotes allot of local priests to justify this.

Any actions which encourage such an ordination: also would incur such: by the nature of such excommunication: if without such: an ordination were not to take place. More than such: asserting the possibility of Women Priests: itself: could incur fears of an automatic excommunication (Canon 1364 excommunicates intentional heretics, schismatics):therefore the airing of a program, wherein many priests in South Africa believe in the needs for women priests: a sentiment, which other parishioners at the parish I attend affirm: that our new priest shares: whereby the question is to be asked: are all these priests excommunicated: and therefore in the same boat as the SSPX entered into in 1988?

Further: why has no action been taken against those guilty of inciting disobedience against the Holy See, and why is it that a work this service sent into the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, for imprimatur: wasn't either accepted or rejected, simply entirely ignored? Why also: are accusations of heresy by authority figures, not dealt with?

Often, this (, the one above: not our further argument/question) argument is used by my sources in SSPX, they say that the local South African church, or large sections of it: is/are in schism, and that often the mass is invalidated by local priests, who they claim often change formulae: they say that they are in the same situation as local Catholics: therefore: they choose the "better" option: of more "orthodox" priests, and more "Valid" masses. Of course, they believe the SSPX is on a mission sent by "God", and that normal Catholics are in the wrong.

Now, the problem with attending SSPX masses, according to the Vatican: lies not in the suspended status of their priests, but in the personal statement, and the state of the personal soul in attending. Often attendance of SSPX church: leads parishioners to enter material heresy, by denying Vatican II for instance. Except in confession, marriage etc: where they have no authority to perform these sacraments: whereby in attending: one is only strongly discouraged in a very strong sense: from attending: in the cases of holy Orders, marriage, confession, and possibly other cases: those involved in procuring such from the SSPX: are doing something canonically illicit: even perhaps invalid: in the case of marriages.

The local church, or to be more accurate: sections of it, because the argument calling it all priests is absurd: while possibly partly materially schismatic, or herectical: is not formally declared such: further: Archbishop Buthi of Johannesburg, is formally against Women priests: and the interviews were obviously not shown in full. The Southern African Bishops: also: do not seem to be propagating such a view as a conference, perhaps: they may play a part in promoting disobedience in Shareholdership in the Southern Cross, and selling such things in parishes, and promoting such service, but it would be charitably acceptable, and I hope those reading will accept: while possibly complicit: their actions do not not directly en masse seem to promote with their own statements: any sort of disobedience: even as a paper partly controlled by them has been cited for promoting disobedience against the Holy See.

Unlike myself: the SABC (Government Station), does not seem to produce full text of what people say: or necessarily seem to give context. The situation is furthered, by possible negligence on the part of the Priests: they may well have been taught heresy in seminary. There is certainly a marked difference between recently trained South African Priests, and foreign trained priests: the Local Priests, seem hardly as capable of doing the most basic jobs: as though inadequately trained in their work, something not mimicked by older, experienced, and professional priests, trained at an earlier stage of our development.

Opus Dei, also: certainly is not in Schism, therefore: even if the diocese, or conference were to en masse enter Schism, the Opus Dei would not be affected, they are not under the authority of local bishops.

Thereby: while disconcerting that so many in the local church have not only publically promoted heresy, and disobedience against the Roman Pontiff, but have also created animosity towards the Vatican: such seems to be a culture: whereby many may believe they are obeying what they think is the Catholic religion, when actualy obeying principles of a sort of "Secular Humanist", "counter-society".

The argument of those in SSPX therefore has weight, but not enough to be a calculated or correct decision. SSPX is a group formally associated with Schism, or at least suspension: attending a mismanaged, or politically motivated mainstream parish, on the other hand, while unwise if there is a better mainstream parish in the Area: is not generally: a statement of schism, except in certain cases, where one may be attending some parishes, such as Saint Mary's in Australia, or in recent cases possibly locally: one may be making a statement of Heresy and Schism.

As such (Attending most "mainstream" parishes) is not in general a statement of schism: such therefore is mostly a valid option: further, because there have been few if any public trials, of dissenting priests, and hierarchy sources: many who are spiritually excommunicated and suspended, have not formally been declared such: whereby one cannot say with certainty whether it has taken hold? Whereby one should attempt to find a loyal local parish: which will help them grow: avoiding occasions of sin, but knowing that not attending Mass on Sundays and days of Obligation: is itself sin, if intentional, and if there are not certain acceptable circumstances, as defined by the Catechism, and church regulations.

The best thing to do: keep attending a parish at which: you are comfortable: but if you know your priest is publicly apposing the Vatican, or know him to be in heresy: then it may be best to mfind another parish, also to not to confess to him, but another priest: both due to his possible suspension, and due to the likely poor advice you will receive. Further: you are putting yourself in his power, and telling him secrets: rather find a more Orthodox priest to do this with: he may have as little respect for the excommunication associated with sharing your sins with the general public, sometimes possibly in danger of them announcing this at mass: as he does for that ex communication: associated with public heresy. Also: rather marry, and attend church and register: where the priest is one who you can trust is orthodox. As to normal mass: if ordained validly: local priests do perform the sacrifice of the mass, if they say certain wrods right, and over the right species. For now, we must simply wait, hope and see.

It is still better to belong to the mainstream: and if possible, attend mass at your local Cathedral: if your bishop is Orthodox, as they often are: or at Opus Dei: which is known for fidelity.

There are many issues in South Africa: but most seem to come from an inherent heterodoxy, which is likely the culprit, the core and real reason: that nine out of ten Johannesburg Catholics reportedly skip mass.

Ultimately: one needs to remain loyal to the papacy, and within the structural church. It is our boat: if there are holes: we must help to plug them up, even if the captain is making them, at our local parish. The way forward lies in our own actions, what we say and do: and how we approach the situation. If many letters were sent to the bishops, and much more were done: if loyal Catholic media were promoted, and if one forfeited their weekly Heterodox "Southern Cross": at the parish level:

...perhaps then: something could happen.

You are the change: and it is by you and your influence: that loyalty and fidelity to the Magisterium will be regained. We are not traditionalists: ...we are Catholics: who support the papacy: if we support our pope. Personally: I am liberal in all but falsehood, and acts of falsehood. This is why I stand by the church on every moral and doctrinal point, and not by the ulter-religion propagated by some misguided, or misinformed, or intentionally heretical/disobedient sections of the church.

We would not publish the dispatches of the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference, and send emails to mny people on what they think and say: if we believed that all was lost, or if we though it unbeneficial. The real hope: we need to become apologists: to educate ourselves, and others on the true situation.

Social Justice: Central Africa: Bishops blame governments for starvation, and destitution of people

Madagascar : Mayor continues campagn: government's "riot police" kill protestors: aiming at violently removing their government

A few days ago: Mayor: Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar's capital Antananarivo: was removed from his position, by Madagascar's president: after attempting to have the well known island's President: Marc Ravalomanana: removed. Rajoelina challenged his removal: was reinstated, and stepped down: his attempt to have the country's constitutional court remove their president: failed. Rajoelina supporters have consistently looted, and have held several violent protests. Up to 25 people died: at the hands of police: after his supporters were told to remove the country's president from the "Presidential" ("Ambohitsorohitra") Palace: causing police loyal to the President: to eventually open fire with live bullets. Original riot police fled in fear, but others resorted to live fire: preventing the removal of the president from his home. Rajoelina, had promised to give Ravalomanana's: "Ambohitsorohitra" presidential palace: to his new "Prime Minister": Roindefo Monja: who he has declared as such without an election, while the Madagascan president still has yet to be defeated.

Andry Rajoelina, has banked on poverty, and controversial foreign economic deals: and the manner in which the Madagascan economy has grown since Ravalomanana, its president: was elected: without much improvement in quality of life for many Madagascans. His means have largely been violent protests, as well as the airing of an interview with an ex-president/dictator of Madagascar: who is in exile, and the government also: has finally responded in a noticeably violent manner. The anti-government protestors: have attacked properties owned by they Island's president, and have shut down, apparently: all but Radio Don Bosco in Antananarivo: the Catholic Radio station, which has somehow survived: despite questioning the anti-governmental claims, of victory: as incorrect.

The protesters, however: accuse Madagascar's president of being a dictator, and at least 68 people have died, at the hands, apparently: of protesters, who broke into riots: deaths because of looting, and violence by protesters: has not been an unusual situation since their violent protests, often involving looting: began. They say that the Madagascan Government has prevented media initiatives: and objected after the sacked mayor: Andry Rajoelina's TV station: was shut down: having aired an interview: with exiled Marxist dictator: then president, then ex-president: "Didier Ratsiraka".

The UN has called on Madagascar's president to protect civilians, and Ban Ki-moom, UN Secretary General: had on Thursday: determined to send an envoy: "Haile Menkerios"; to assess how the UN (United nations): can encourage peace in the troubled nation.

Radio Don Bosco, and Fides News: both believe that the protests are losing power. Claims exist that tensions still are there: but people need to work.

While the sacked mayor: has proclaimed that he controls the Island: the government still: clearly controls the riot police. The Madagascan situation is rife with controversy and with complexity. Both sides have now resorted in some measure: to violence. Foreign nations: have expressed distress over the situation. There are hopes to cause dialogue between the sides. Madagascar's president was legitimately elected, and the Madagascan Parliament: largely consisting of his supporters: since his being elected: is the only body: which could impeach the president under the Madagascan constitution: it seems: from the ruling of their constitutional court.

It is thought that Madagascar's violent upstart, by a sacked mayor: may well have been overplayed: that there is not enough support to remove the country's president. An attempt to set up a second authority, apposing Madagascar's presidency, and government: has resulted in a power vacuum, according to the anti-government group: whose leader: has cited this as a reason to call himself leader of the country. He has said that a transitional government would contain representation from all the regions of the Island. The damage of his efforts: on the people of Madagascar: who are angry: already because of economic issues: and the effects of the global downturn: could well mean that this is a situation: that Madagascar could be better without.

Whether or not accusations about mismanagement of Madagascar are true: the Large Island nation: could soon need extensive international aid: with commerce, and communication centers having been attacked by the insurgency.

It is not the first time: that Madagascar has had two rival governments: 2002 saw violence: due to doubt as to whether or not its current president, or the Marxist predecessor: was president. When the situation was cleared up: the current: embattled President of Madagascasr: was declared the winner. There was already the visibility of signs of the current struggle of personality: in July last year.

Social Justice South Africa: CAR; North Africa: Central African Republic sends troops to Congo Border

"Central African Republic", is sending troops to their border, as a "buffer", against LRA ("Lord's Resistance Army") rebels, believed to be operating out of the DRC (Congo). The LRA, has been accused of recent atrocities in Southern Sudan, and in other countries. Defence Minister Jean Francis Bozize, of the "Central African republic" (CAR), claimed that troops would be sent to the border. They will be in High Mbomou Province, which borders on Sudan, which has accused the LRA of attacks, High Mbomou Province also, importantly borders on the DRC, where the rebels are believed, by some important sources: to base themselves.

The LRA, have been implicated in human rights abuses, and a recent massacre in a Catholic church. The LRA, are lead by a Mr. Joseph Kony, who is wanted in the International Criminal Court (ICC), that is: in the Hague: for war crimes. Accusations against the LRA, include those by Catholic Ethos Umbrella Humanitarian Group: Caritas internationalis.

Kenya, drought a "National Emergency"- Kenyan government

The Kenyan Government, has declared a "National Emergency", after a drought "has" allegedly rendered +-10 000 000 (Ten Million) Kenyan Citizens "Food Insecure"; according to a Reuters article; via AlertNet: which quotes the Kenyan government. This situational report, by Reuters: is largely based on a release, by the office of Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki's office, even as Reuters, but not the Kenyan government: notes the role of violence in the situation. Kenya, has seen human rights violation related accusations, and electoral violence in recent times, and accusations: of death squads, and the resulting reduction in tourism, a recent drought has hit it hard.

Kenya, will now, among other measures: begin to import: 5 000 000 (Five Million) additional bags of maize due to a shortfall: largely blamed on 2007 election violence, which resulted in +-1 300 (One Thousand, and Three Hundred) deaths, and +-300 000 (Three Hundred Thousand) people being driven from their homes, due to violence.

Both the Kenyan government, and working independent of them, Catholic Relief Services, are attempting to minimize the damage done by an alleged Drought and Famine, which is affecting many citizens in Kenya. The role of election violence, and allegations of Government death squads, and political persecution in this, possibly, could have increased vulnerability to the situation. Most of the efforts, seem to focus on basics, such as food, water, and farming products. Kenya: more general Overview:

Kenya, was once one of Africa's so-called: shining stars, however, electoral violence, and purported human rights abuses, along with drought, and famine: have harshly affected, what once was a nation, seen, perhaps falsely as a hope for many.

In previous articles, we have covered, the political situation in Kenya, having stabilized somewhat at this stage. Recent events, however: show a government, made up largely of people, seemingly more interested in their own political success, than in the success of their country. The global economic downturn, will likely also affect such nations: but with such a makeshift government, the chances are, that problems in Kenya, won't be ultimately solved overnight. Efforts, at helping populations make it through such trying times: however, can make differences in lives, just as efforts in Zimbabwe, and the DRC (Congo), have paid off somewhat.

Corruption, and accountability in Africa

What Kenya, and much of Africa: truly need at this point, is accountability for actions, politically, and in business. That a situation, such as the one: over, or perhaps caused by alleged vote rigging, and alleged political human rights abuses: has occurred: has made Kenya less able to deal with life threatening situations.

The judgment of a previous Judge : had dethroned South Africa's president: and caused a political crisis. Now the prosecution's case against ANC president Jacob Zuma, by the NPA, has been allowed to proceed. Many of Zuma's actions have been called into question, as well as the previous judgment. Shabir Shaik, Zuma's financial advisor was sent to prison: for a "Generally" "Corrupt" relationship it is alleged he has had with Jacob Zuma. Following this, and recent evidence, as well as Zuma's chances of becoming president heightening: the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) decided to prosecute Zuma, a choice which had been overturned by a lower court, and was upheld today.

Accusations against South Africa's President, at the time, and others of conspiracy against Zuma (discounted as baseless in legal terms: by the overruling judge in the case), during a previous proceeding, under a judge in a lower court, by a certain Judge Nicholson, who had ruled to curb proceedings at the time: of prosecution, had been used by Zuma allies to purge their party of Thabo Mbeki, the president of the country at the time, and of his supporters, even resulting in By-Elections, in which the ANC lost many wards, despite voter intimidation, in areas where they took it apon themselves to register late, and in areas: where they competed for wards, where ANC leaders had once been voted in.

A woman was stoned during other previous proceedings against Zuma, allegedly by his followers, in a case of mistaken identity, when they believed it was the woman (Now in Exile), who accused the current communist affiliated ANC president of rape. If she retracts her statements, and only then, according to local news: will the ANC guarantee her safety in South Africa.

Zuma supporters, have also called for the "annihilation" of the DA, South Africa's current main opposition, also: ANC members have been accused of threatening, or intimidating voters, of political violence, and have said they are prepared to seemingly take up arms and "Kill for Zuma", statements promptly mimicked by Afrikaners, who said they would take up arms to protect the Constitution of South Africa. A judge was accused of meddling in the Zuma trial, by approaching two different judges, and new political Party: COPE, found it odd, when police would not allow them to take to the streets in promotion of their conference: after the ANC, suddenly decided to hold an event nearby: riot police turned up to keep COPE in check.

COPE, gets much of its support, partly from supporters of dethrowned ANC president Thabo Mbecki: who had been resident president since previous elections, in which he got into power: until such time, as Polokwane, when Zuma supporters Voted Jacob Zuma as ANC preident: the officials of the elected ANC, where often replaced.

Many of the members of COPE, like those of the ANC: were previously staunch ANC members, under Mbeki: and perhaps prior this: what is interesting: is that we have not been able to find any objection by leading current members of COPE, such as "Terror" (nicknamed for soccer performance: former defense minister) Lekota, when the ANC forced all Members of Parliament in their party to vote for allowing mass, and radical legal abortion, which violates the "rights" of conscientious objectors to object to partaking in abortion, and they also were not vocal enough, if vocal or absent at all to even be heard by Scripturelink, should it have been possible: when the ANC forced through "gay marriage", if they objected at all: we have no record of such: and which we have no record of, has not had any major statements to the contrary, from these men, as far as we have heard. 9 in every 10 South Africans appose abortion, and 4 out of every 5: consider homosexual acts to always be wrong.

The ANC recently disbanded the Scorpions; in a time, when several ANC members were under investigation for serious crimes. The Constitutional Court of South Africa: recently upheld the move to disband the Scorpions: South Africa's FBI: as constitutional.

All my facts are based on proceedings aired on E Television, and local secular news sources: ETV is South Africa's independent news, and entertainment channel (i.e. the other three are government controlled; while DSTV, is satellite and paid audience). A South African Bishop, recently also said that due to the actions of men: in which he included the Zuma scenario: that South Africa was on the slide to "Sin and Ruin", this was by Archbishop Buthi of the Archdiocese of Johannesburg.

They said they would leave by the end of 2008, and they are packing up. Ethiopian troops, have been the lifeblood of order in Somalia, now they are to leave: News 24 reports of the danger posed by Islamic rebels on the loss of the Ethiopian army.

Somalia's president resigned recently, cited as an obstacle to peace: he had lost most of Somalia to rebels: by the time of his resignation.

Somalia's president has resigned, having been blockaded by a regional group, and called a blockade to peace efforts, by some authorities. The warlord president was propped up against Islamic insurgents, by the International Community, and seems to have been leading a sort of interim government. Within 30 days there should be elections, also important: Ethiopian troops are leaving the torn and ravaged country soon.

Nigeria, North Africa: Pope decries Violence: our analysis!

It is easy to classify violence in Nigeria as inter-religious: really, it is not. The Pope has urged peaceful manners of solving a recent outbreak. The church does not support the burning of mosques, nor enjoy the burning of Church related buildings, and churches.

It is different tribal, and ethnic groups often, and also: violence centers on something enemies hold dear: religion. If it were only Churches being burnt, we may not have heard of such, if it were simply violence over politics, or tribal wars: we may not have heard it. Instead, latching onto religion: individual persons have turned to what the church condemns as meaningless violence. Protecting one's family via violence is not meaningless, fighting aggressors, or rising up against an unjust aggressor, is not meaningless: according to the church: but burning mosques, and churches; turning on bystanders, and fellow citizens. This is foreign to Islam, and foreign to Christianity.

The violence, in earlier years: was blamed on unemployment, and similar socioeconomic issues: like Somalia: where corruption is rife in government, when violence is easy, and goes unpunished: where money is scarce: and religion is abused: and yielded over others: violence breaks.

Where violence defends rights, so be it: but these are not crusaders, they are gangs: is a nation converted to any religion by force? Truly, fear reigns in a country, or region where such seems needed to citizens. One must pity such circumstances: when one turns to senseless violence: one feels one is not safe.

Attacks are likely because one anticipates attacks, attacks are because any yielding of any ground comes with fear of persecution, which often comes: in anticipation of more from others. In recent elections, an outbreak of violence has followed: clearly spawned of this endless fear that grips. Attacks make one feel in control, even vindicated in belief. Saying this does not justify the foolish, incoherent actions of mobs, nor should any claim this is religious: it is immoral.

Such an environment is deadly.More than that, it really seems senseless.

The allegations are of a rigged election, this seems likely in Africa, few nations don't have some allegations: that it turned violent, and the army was called in: shows just how tribal violence has become, and how distrustful, perhaps rightly, perhaps not: people are of their government in the region. It also shows that arrogant gangsters: are allowed to get away with senseless shows of their personal pride, and that they do not value their opposition as human: in a sickening theatre of diabolical violent sectarianism: which does not permit one's ideological foes life.

EWTN is hosting a story by Catholic News Agency, based on an article by Agenzia Fides: saying that the bishops in Sudan are warning of increased tensions and that a peace treaty may fall apart. The rebels say they are mirroring government efforts, the government says they are updating old weaponry: both are seemingly entered in a dangerous arms race, that could see a return to a war ended in 2005.
