The Third Encyclical: Charity in Truth

Pope Benedict XVI spoke out today, Tuesday July 07, 2009, regarding our selfish desires in our economy, the desire of “more”, the waste, the mentality of wanting profit-at-all costs, greed. He spoke about this document, his third encyclical, Charity in Truth, being in the works for two years and constantly being delayed to include the continuous fallout from the crisis in our economy worldwide.

This document was released one day before the G8, Group of Eight industrialized nations, meet to discuss a plan on how to deal with this global crisis, a warning to leaders to devise a plan that will work otherwise to expect more of this downturn in the economy to occur.

"Profit is useful if it serves as a means toward an end," he wrote. "Once profit becomes the exclusive goal, if it is produced by improper means and without the common good as its ultimate end, it risks destroying wealth and creating poverty."

The mentality of our economy towards greed has brought on this economic disaster and there has been nothing like it since the Great Depression.

The release seemed just since world leaders need to devise a plan with ethics, people centered ethics, in order for the economy to flourish which is very possibly.

He spoke of the wealthier countries urging them to help development aid to poor countries, such as Africa which suffer from world hunger, he specified aid should go towards agricultural development to improve communication, all infrastructures, irrigation systems, transport and sharing of these agricultural technologies which have benefitted some countries immensely and others have nothing.

He also stressed that nations re-evaluate immediately their energy consumptions both for the improvement of the environment but also to allow for the poor to have access to energy resources. Learning to use our natural resources efficiently not abusively seems to be our biggest challenge.
