While the Irish Constitution, notably altered, in 1995: in order for the state to permit divorce in the European country, has been cited by the Associated Press, as the reason, why those pushing the Irish "Civil Partnership Bill", passed on Friday, have not formally recognized so-called "Gay marriage", the new legislation notably, gives many of the legal rights and recourses related to Marriage: to cohabitating couples: seemingly: whether heterosexual or homosexual.

The bill was seemingly submitted by: Irish Justice Minister (Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform since May 2008) Dermot Ahern (of the political party: "Fianna Fáil"), who himself noted that, the Irish Government was giving many of the privileges ("rights") given married couples: to "Civil Partners", and himself seemingly noted the Irish Constitution's part in preventing further endorsement by the state. He further called the passing of the bill, legal recognition by the Irish state, of homosexual relationships.

Legally binding privileges given "Civil Partners", include aspects of marital privileges such those associated with: maintenance, and retirement.

In 1979, Ireland's politicians: legalized use of so-called contraceptives, in 1993, homosexuality was decriminalized, following an 1988 European Court decision.
